Have you driven on South Mt. Olive Street (from the Kenwood intersection north) lately? WOW! What an incredible drive. A road never rode so smoothly...not since Lightening McQueen resurfaced Main Street in Radiator Springs in “Cars” has there been so smooth a surface!
But if you think back a month or so, the road was getting a little rough. Then the road crew spent some time working on it and it seemed to make it worse! Instead of a few rough spots, the whole road was a rough spot.
Then they put a new surface of asphalt down and the road was smooth, but there was a major “bump” getting on or off of (or across) Mt. Olive.
But now the edges have been smoothed, the lines repainted and it is absolutely wonderful. Somehow we look back and all of the inconvenience during the resurfacing project was worth it.
Life is sometimes like that as well. We start to be in need of a little “work” if you will (a few rough spots and potholes). Our life seems to be getting off course.
Then God comes along and, well, sometimes it seems His fixing it makes things worse. But in the end, we look back and we see that everything He did was worth it and our lives are smooth and heading back in the right direction.
I think this is what James means in James 1:2-4 when he writes:
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (ESV)
And David writes, “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning.” (Psalm 30:5, ESV)
No matter how painful the process; no matter how seemingly unpleasant the situation may seem - God has a plan an a purpose for what you are going through.
So don’t give up! Things might be bad now, you might be going through a trial...you might be weeping. But remember that God is still in control and He has a reason and if we will but stay the course, that newly surfaced road may be just around the corner.
