First of all, in November, 1998, Rachel was born. The very first sermon Rachel heard/slept through, which, by the way was entitled, “Yes, Rachel, there is a God!”, was in the church building in Leedey, OK. A cute story is that when Rachel was about 3 weeks old, one of the little boys at church (3 or 4 years old) asked Monica if Rachel had “opened her eyes yet”...farm kids are so cute...or maybe you just had to be there.
Then, at some point in February, 2000 or so, Jamie was brought into existence. She wouldn’t be born until after we’d moved from Leedey, but you can see how significant the 2 years and 5 months that we lived in Leedey were to our family.
I also learned a little bit about farm life and, especially, wheat harvest. I even was able to ride in, but not actually drive, a combine with one of the brothers there one season (one day was all it took for my appreciation for those who live this life to grow by leaps and bounds).
I learned much about ministry during my time in Leedey. A lot of who I am as a minister was formed during my time in Leedey (and in other places where I ministered).
So why am I telling you this now? And why am I highlighting a place where I was for less than 2½ years? Well, because Leedey is located in western Oklahoma and the “Rhea Fire” that ravaged western Oklahoma has adversely affected the lives of many in the congregation in Leedey (and many more in the town itself).
Barns were lost, farm equipment was destroyed, people’s livelihoods just suddenly gone up in smoke (pun intended). And, yes, some of those people are your brothers and sisters in Christ.
I asked the elders here if we could do something to help the congregation in Leedey directly and they determined that a box will be placed in the foyer Wednesday, April 25 and Sunday, April 29 for those who would like to help.
The church will then send a check to the Leedey church of Christ to be used at the discretion of the elders in Leedey to help people affected by the wild fire in western Oklahoma.
P.S. If you are not a member at Eastgate but would like to help the saints in Leedey, you can mail a check directly to them at Church of Christ; PO Box 207; Leedey, OK73654
