We have some friends who have 17 years experience raising Labs and they were over on Tuesday. While they were at our house, apparently Princeton (our 3 year old Shih Tzu) got too close to Shadow’s cage or toy or something and the two of them had a brief “discussion.”
Of course we all scolded Shadow for attacking Princeton. Our friend said they were just figuring out territory and toy possession and that it looked a lot worse than it really was and we really only needed to be worried if it looks like there will be blood...we really don’t want it to get to that point. (If you are not familiar with the size difference of a Lab and a Shih Tzu, we’ll just say it is considerable.)
The bottom line is they were determining who was the “Alpha Male” in the home. What they fail to realize is that there already is an “Alpha Male” in our home...and neither of them is it: I am.
I am the head of the household...a position given me by God (see Ephesians 5:23). The two dogs can argue and “discuss” things all day, but I am the one in charge. I’m not trying to rile anyone up by saying this; I am wanting to make a point.
There are people who want to fuss and fight over who is the most important, over who is the “top dog.” So we debate things and argue about things and get ourselves all worked up trying to show that we are number one.
Unfortunately, this can even be seen in churches. I say unfortunately because Ephesians 5:23 reads: “The husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior.”
The church already has it’s “Alpha Male” and it is the One who is the “Alpha and Omega.” We must submit to Him in all things.
