This year, when “Punxsutawney Phil” (the most famous of groundhogs) rose from his den in Punxsutawney, PA, he saw his shadow...meaning his forecast was for six more weeks of winter.
Not a real big deal. Although some claim Phil is right 100% of the time, a little fact checking reveals his correctness is around 39% (“Time” online February 2, 2018).
Six weeks from February 2 of this year was March 16. The official first day of Spring is March 20. Yet on April 7, 2018 we saw a dusting of snow (and a human weatherman tells me there is a chance we will see another dusting of snow on April 15).
For the record, April 7 was 9 weeks, one day after “Groundhog Day” and April 15 will be 10 weeks, two days after.
There are a lot of people who put a lot of stock in what the groundhog says. They plan their lives and, perhaps, livelihood, around Punxsutawney Phil’s weather forecast.
Then you have others who rely on the “Farmer’s Almanac” for telling them what to do and when to do it. Others will change plans if their favorite weather forecaster says that in 10 days, something will happen.
Then, when whoever or whatever they rely on proves to be inaccurate...well, they trust them again next time.
Wouldn’t it be great if there was some source we could look at that is right 100% of the time? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had a source we could turn to that is never wrong?
Well, we do! It is the best-selling book of all time. Most homes have at least one copy (either in print or electronic format). It is, of course, The Bible.
In Psalm 111:7 we read (of God), “...all his precepts are trustworthy.” God has never failed to keep a promise. Nothing predicted by one of His servants has ever failed to come to pass. God is accurate 100% of the time. Can the same be said about the “Farmer’s Almanac” or any weather person - whether they have two or four legs?
The Word of God speaks of a future day. A day when Jesus will return. These are the only prophecies of God that have not yet been fulfilled. The only thing we know about that day is that nobody knows when it will be...we just have to be ready for it when it happens.
Are you ready?
