Apparently Watts, OK used to be a happening place. The Kansas City Southern railroad needed a midway point to stop on its line from Pittsburg, KS to Heavener, OK. Thus the town of Watts, OK came into being.
Well, as time and technology would have it, diesel trains came along that did not need to be serviced in Watts, OK. When that happened, the town began to decline.
In 2000, the census showed Watts to have a population of 316. In the 2010 census, the population was 324...an increase of 2.5%!
Why am I telling you this? Fair question. The town of Watts, OK was tied directly to one thing...the railroad. So long as the train was stopping, the town was thriving. But when the railroad stopped stopping in Watts, the town began to decline.
Our faith is tied to exactly one thing as well: the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15:14 that “...if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain.”
Paul continues in verse 17 to say, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.”
Then in verse 19, “If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.”
So I didn’t come up with the idea of our faith being tied to the resurrection of Jesus: Paul did! If Jesus wasn’t raised from the dead preaching is vain; faith is vain and futile; and we are to be pitied more than anybody else.
But then we read 1 Corinthians 15:20, “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead…” Our faith is tied to the resurrection of Jesus and that is something that will never ever no longer be needed.
Something better will never come along. Nothing or nobody will ever replace Him. Jesus’ resurrection is and will always be the cornerstone of our faith.
Now is our time to THRIVE!
